Brief History
The Federal Hotel Collie was built in 1901 and is one of a handful of old heritage-style pubs in the town of Collie.
J.T. Jones – a gifted saddle and harness maker turned businessman from Dandenong Victoria decided to visit Western Australia in 1891 following the “gold rush” developments in the south-west at the time. After spending a number of years visiting various goldfields, his considerable success helped his decision to settle in his new surrounds. After taking a brief visit back to Victoria, he returned back to Western Australia and headed to Collie, where he built and started the business at the Federal Hotel Collie.
The Federal Hotel Collie narrowly escaped a huge fire in 1914, which broke out at the end of Throssell Street, destroying 11 shops and the Collie Miner building. In 1920 the hotel went through a major renovation and in following years there were a number of improvements made including remodelling work.
The Federal Hotel Collie saw many licensees taking over including: Mrs J.T. (Margaret) Blakely in 1906, J.T. Jones in 1910, William Morgans (“Paddy King”) in 1913, Wally Webb between 1915 to 1919 and Reg Parker in 1924. A gentleman by the name of Eddie Woods, who was held in high esteem in the shearing industry, owned and ran the Federal Hotel Collie during the 1970s and 1980s.
Today the Federal Hotel Collie is a fine example of a country hotel which has made a significant contribution to the streetscape and architectural heritage of Collie.
